Angeline

Angeline Steenstra

Angelina is a survivor of date rape.  Like many who are traumatized, confused, and pregnant following a rape, Angelina eventually found herself being talked into having an abortion in order to “fix” her problem.

An abortion clinic counselor confirmed all of Angelina’s fears about the pregnancy- “the fear of being ridiculed, rejected, a bad example to my siblings, of losing the love of my immediate and extended family, of being a single mother, of my inability to care for another, of not finishing school.”  The counselor told her to get a friend to lend her the money to pay for an abortion.

Angelina went through with the pregnancy and instantly regretted that decision.  She recalls, “I felt the horror of “What have I done?”I was filled with helplessness, shock and instant regret before it was even over. I began to cry uncontrollably — it all happened so fast. There was no turning back, no reversing the contents of the bottle. It was such a horrible reality — so very final!” The abortion led Angelina into a spiral of depression and self-destructive behavior. Ultimately the abortion proved more traumatic than the rape and Angelina only found closure when she recognized that this.

Angelina now works helping women who have gone through similar experiences.  She is the President and Co-founder of Second Chance Post Abortion Healing, and is also the National Coordinator of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign Canada.
