Penalties for Rapists
The average sentencing for rape in Ireland is 5-7 years.[1] This is simply unacceptable.
The majority of rapes are committed by those who are known to the victim. The Rape Crisis Network of Ireland’s 2013 report states that 91% of rapes were perpetrated by a family member, friend, acquaintance, or neighbour.[2]
With this in mind, it is understandable why the majority of women who are rape refrain from reporting the crime to the police, and many are terrified at the prospect of reporting or testifying against their rapist. If women know that there is a real possibility that their assailant could be released so quickly and that he might retaliate against them (or their children), it is a strong deterrent from speaking out.
Additionally, the possibility that the rapist, once free, might be able to claim parental rights adds an additional level of terror to women who have already been through untold trauma. We must work to make sure that these sexual predator are never again in a position to hurt these women or their children. Women should be supported to report these horrific crimes and to be assured that they and their children will be protected.
Harsher penalties are needed to ensure that rape survivors and their children are protected, are able to seek justice, and live happy and fulfilled lives.
Abortion Used to Cover Sexual Abuse
Often, women who become pregnant as the result of rape are encouraged to terminate their pregnancies. However, very little attention is given to how abortion is used by rapists to cover up sexual assault.
There have been many reports in the news of sexual offenders using abortion as a way to cover up their crimes. The most famous case recently was the infamous predator Jimmy Savile who, in at least two instances, sent his victims for abortions to successfully cover up what he had done.
The use of abortion to aid and abet rapists is criminal. Women who have already been victimized are forced to undergo an additional trauma and then forced to return to abusers.
There have been many instances where abortion clinics have failed to report underage abortions. Most often, this places girls who are victims of statutory rape back into the power of their rapists and prevents justice from being served to sexual predators.
Abortion should never be used to cover up such a heinous crime. More efforts should be made to protect these vulnerable women and from their abusers and those who would force or coerce them into abortions. All rapists should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Jimmy Savile
Infamous sex offender and television personality Jimmy Savile reportedly had more than 100 victims over the years. At least two of these victims were impregnated by Savile, who forced the girls to abort in order to cover up his crimes.
One victim was sixteen-years-old when she was raped and impregnated by Savile, who told her that she must get an abortion and threaten suicide if the doctor did not want to perform the procedure.
However, the doctor agreed to perform the abortion and, in his medical notes, commented, “I understand the parents will be having a word with the gentleman concerned. I hope it will scare him off.”
George Gibney
George Gibney, former Ireland national swim coach, became infamous for his sexual abuse of young swimmers. He was eventually charged with 27 counts of indecency against young swimmers and of carnal knowledge of girls under the age of 15.
In addition to these crimes, Gibney reportedly impregnated a 17-year-old swimmer after raping her in a hotel room. The, now adult, victim reports that Gibney paid for her to travel to England and receive an abortion in order to cover up his crimes and that she was drugged during the trip to England.

Dr. Ulrich Klopfer
In August 2016, the medical license of Dr. Ulrich Klopfer was suspended by the Indiana Medical Licensing Board. Dr. Klopfer was one of the most prolific abortion doctors in the state of Indiana, performing tens of thousands of abortions procedures during his career.
Dr. Klopfer’s license was suspended for performing an abortion on a 10-year-old girl who had been raped by her uncle and failing to report the abuse to the police. The girl was returned home to her parents who refused to prosecute the rapist.
The board found Klopfer guilty of 5 out of 9 charges and suspended him for six months. Klopfer must pay a $3000 fine as well as undergoing addition medical education and child abuse training.

Grey David Woods
In 2007, Grey David Woods began abusing the 12-year-old daughter of his live-in girlfriend. When the girl was 15 she became pregnant by her abuser. Woods and the girl’s mother told the victim to get an abortion and her mother drove her to Planned Parenthood herself.
Following the abortion, the abuse continued to two more years before the authorities were alerted. Woods, and the victims mother, were both arrested and Woods was later convicted of 16 counts of sexual abuse of a minor. He was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

Luis Gonzalez-Jose
In 2013, 31-year-old Luis Gonzalez-Jose raped a pre-teen girl in her own home while her mother was in another room. The girl became pregnant and Gonzalez-Jose took her to a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic to abort her child. The rapist told his victim that it would “be best for her” not to have a baby.
The young girl eventually told authorities and Gonzalez-Jose was arrested. He eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree rape of a child and has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Rene Lopez
In October 2016, Rene Lopez of California was sentenced to 1,503 years in prison after being convicted on 186 counts of sexual assault, including dozens of counts of rape of a minor. The victim was his own daughter and the abuse took place over a four year period.
When the young girl became pregnant as a result of rape, Lopez paid for an abortion in order to cover up his crime and the abuse continued until the victim found the courage to leave home.
Lopez’s prison sentence is the longest recorded in Fresno Superior Court History.

Christopher Allen Brammer
In 2000, the then 56-year-old Brammer began raping his 11-year-old step-granddaughter. Later he also began raping his 15-year-old stepdaughter. He eventually impregnated both girls and paid for them to have abortions. After the authorities were made aware of the situation, Brammer was arrested and in 2011 he was convicted and sentenced to 36 years and four months in the state penitentiary.

Jeffrey Cheshier
In 2006, Jeffrey Cheshier was arrested after taking his teenager step-daughter and victim into a Planned Parenthood clinic for an abortion. Cheshier had been abusing the girl for more than a year.
His young victim stated that he forced her to abort her child in order to get rid of the evidence. Chesier was arrested and charged but died before he could be taken to trial.
